Activities

Hay Neigh-bors!

On the morning reserved for horseback riding, campers awaken to the sounds of neighing and whinnying echoing through the camp as the Back Country Horsemen  ready their mounts for the day’s activity at camp.

Horseback RidingHORSEBACK RIDING is an enormous pleasure for some campers and a new challenge for others. For someone who is confined in a wheel chair, being up on the back of a horse is a whole new world. “It’s like being on a camel!” one camper exclaimed as she "o-o-o-o-o-ed and ah-h-h-ed" all the way down the trail. For some, just petting the horse is enough.

Juelie Dalzell , Prosecuting Attorney for Jefferson County, organizes the  the camp horseback riding sessions. Members of the BackCountry Horsemen  bring their horses and equipment to camp. There is a minimum of three people with the camper during the ride: the owner who leads the horse down the trail, the camper’s counselor and at least one experienced volunteer walking alongside the camper. For campers requiring additional support, an experienced person will sit behind the camper to insure safety.

Pool Noodles

Ride & Sing
Shout out your request or just start the song yourself. Spirits are high and the mood is jolly as we roll along on the bus from camp to the Port Townsend Public Swimming Pool. All the favorites are sung at least once during the thirty-minute ride from camp to pool with big smiles all around.

Once in the water, the big bags of balls and noodles come out and everyone splashes their way to water fun. For those who find it tiresome to walk or to sit in a wheelchair, floating in the warm water is like heaven. Often the counselors can be seen guiding their campers through the water while the camper is floating on their back, buoyed up by noodles or floatation devices. The singing smiles that started on the bus are continued here.

For those requiring assistance to enter or leave the water, a sling is avaiilable. Campers who do not swim participate in pool-side activities. Volunteers and staff remain attentive to each camper insuring he or she is engaging in a fun-filled activity and providing assistance as needed in locker room tasks.

FISH WISH

“The wheels on the bus go round and round…” the campers sing as our transport takes us from camp to Wildwood Farm in Quilcene, home of a variety of organic produce and a small trout pond with very big fish in it. We spread our blankets under the trees, open the cooler full of juices and prepare to fish.

Here, the volunteers help to bait hooks, net the fish and help clean them. Every camper who wants to fish is guaranteed a fine catch. Most of the time the fish bite as soon as the line hits the water. No fly fishing lessons needed!

This is a unique experience for campers and their smiles show how much they love it.

ARTS & CRAFTS

Arts & Crafts Arts & crafts activities are very popular at NW Kiwanis Camp. The activities begin shortly after arriving at camp. Campers make unique name tags and decorate their own paper bag that will contain all their finished projects.

Art projects are included in the scavenger hunt, as part of the campers’ daily routine and to support other camp activities. Hats, masks, jewelry, painting and beading are just a few of the projects the campers enjoy.

Tie Dye to die for: White tee shirts are transformed into eye-catching patterns made up of every color in the rainbow. A fashion must!
